Eugene Onegin’s letter to Tatiana

Eugene Onegin's letter to Tatiana

I foresee everything: you will be insulted
Sad mystery explanation.
What bitter contempt
Your proud gaze will be depicted!
What do I want? for what purpose
Will I open my soul to you?
What a vicious merriment,
Maybe I’ll give you a reason!

By chance you once met,
A spark of tenderness is noticed in you,
I didn’t dare to believe her:
Habit cute did not give way;
Your shameful freedom
I didn’t want to lose.
Another thing separated us…
The unfortunate victim of Lensky fell…
From all that is sweet to the heart,
Then I severed my heart;
Alien to all, unrelated,
I thought: liberty and peace
A substitute for happiness. My god!
How wrong I was, how punished!

No, to see you minute by minute,
Everywhere to follow you,
The smile of the mouth, the movement of the eyes
Catch with loving eyes,
Listen to you for a long time, understand
With your soul all your perfection,
To freeze before you in agony,
Pale and fade… that’s bliss!

And I’m deprived of that: for you
I drag myself everywhere at random;
I cherish the day, I cherish the hour:
And I’m wasting in vain boredom.
Fate has counted down the days.
And they are so painful.
I know: my century is measured;
But that my life may last,
I have to be sure in the morning
That I will see you in the afternoon…

I fear: in the supplication of my humble
See your stern gaze
Plotting a despicable trick —
And I hear your angry reproach.
When Would You Know How Terrible It Is
Longing for love,
To burn — and with the mind all the time
To humble the excitement in the blood;
To want to hug your knees,
And, sobbing, at your feet
Pour out supplications, confessions, penalties,
Everything, everything I could express,
Meanwhile, feigned coolness.
To arm both speech and gaze,
Have a calm conversation,
Look at you with a cheerful look!..

But so be it: I’m myself
There is no more power to resist;
Everything is decided: I am in your will,
And I surrender to my fate.
